FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- April 21, 2010 -- The world's first virtual use of Yoga Nidra has been created within the Fearless Nation online community as a relaxation resource for people with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Fearless Nation is an international, nondenominational, multicultural community of PTSD and trauma survivors, offering support, education and understanding of the symptoms and treatment of PTSD using the latest research and scientific information about PTSD. The members-only community exists within the virtual reality environment (VRE) of Second Life.

The VRE of Second Life allows people with PTSD to create avatars, or digital versions of themselves, to interact with other people in a safe, controlled environment.

"There is no other virtual environment offering Nidra Relaxation," says Colleen Crary, founder of Fearless Nation. "Yoga Nidra has been shown to reduce anxiety, create higher quality sleep patterns, promote better physical and mental health, and help people gain control over their fear response. These are all essential tools for helping people learn to deal with their PTSD symptoms."

The Nidra Relaxation Cove within Fearless Nation features both Eastern and Western Nidra relaxation techniques. It is available exclusively for members of the Fearless Nation group.

"Research has shown that virtual reality environments can help people with PTSD to re-train their brains toward healing and recovery through shared experiences," says Crary. "Second Life provides the perfect environment for this approach."

In addition to the benefits of Yoga Nidra, Fearless Nation provides a safe, private and anonymous community for PTSDers. "This allows them to try activities in a safe environment that they may eventually be able to transfer from a virtual environment to the real world," says Crary.
